Howard Webb recently spoke to Millers Matchday, here is a snippet of the interview with the full version still available from the club shop:

There was a special guest at the New York Stadium last month, former World Cup final referee and lifelong Rotherham United fan Howard Webb.

He was invited by John Breckin to see Steve Evans’ men comfortably dismantle Blackburn Rovers 2-0 and he could see for himself how his beloved Millers were adapting to life in the Sky Bet Championship.

Webb admits that the club has made huge strides under Tony Stewart and Steve Evans, and that despite the Championship being an unforgiving league, the Millers will have enough to survive this season.

“We all knew it was going to be a tough challenge this season,” Howard told Millers Matchday recently. “We’ve made amazing progress over the last couple of years under Steve Evans and the club as a whole has made huge progress under Tony Stewart.

“We didn’t expect to be where we are and we’re so pleased to have got an opportunity to see Championship football here at New York Stadium so early. Of course it’s going to be tough and the fans need to be patient. But I think we’ll have enough to survive this season and then build from there going into next season.”

Having watched Rotherham United from an early age, Webb has experienced the highs and the lows of being a Miller and seen many different Rotherham teams. However there is one team in particular which holds a special place in his heart.

“That team of 1980/81 that won promotion from the old Third Division. Because I was at the impressionable age of around eight or nine those players were giants in my eyes. We won the league and went up to what is now the Championship.

“Looking back they were amazing times for a young man like me to see a team winning continuously, and winning with some style. So amongst all the memories I’ve got, that was probably the highlight season.”
