The defender has penned a two-year deal with the club and adds depth to the Millers defensive options, which also include new fellow new signings Kirk Broadfoot, Richard Wood and Mat Sadler.

Richardson, who has a wealth of experience, played his football at Championship level last season firstly with parent club Middlesbrough, and then concluding the campaign with Ipswich Town on loan.

The 31-year-old, who started his career at Leeds United, will join up with his new team mates next week when the baulk of the squad return to pre-season training.

After making over 150 appearances for the Elland Road club, he also enjoyed spells with the likes of Charlton Athletic and Southampton.
