Ex-Miller Liam King captains North Ferriby United to FA Trophy win...
Former Millers academy graduate Liam King tasted Wembley success on Sunday as he captained North Ferriby United to a victory over Wrexham which saw them lift the FA Trophy.King played seven games during his time at Millmoor, in a spell with the Millers spanning over four years between 2005 and 2009.
Like the club he plied his trade with as youngster experienced last May, the Villagers found themselves 2-0 down at the national stadium, before King’s penalty put them back in contention after 76 minutes.
North Ferriby Chairman Les Hare insisted he thought the former Millers trainee’s strike sparked the Villagers’ revival at Wembley, with things looking bleak before his captain’s spot kick:
“At 2-0 down and with not long left to play I was beginning to think the dream was over. But these players never know when they are beaten and once Liam scored with the penalty it looked like an equaliser would come.”
The equaliser did come soon after and the game went on to finish 3-3 in extra time with a penalty shooutout needed to separate the sides.
King, who came through the youth ranks at Millmoor, was successful again from 12 yards with the first penalty before North Ferriby went on to win 5-4 and lift the FA Trophy.
Ferriby manager Billy Heath lauded his players’ spirit after their Wembley win on Sunday:
“The players did me, themselves and the Club proud Adam Nicklin will make the headlines but they were all heroes today."
