New signing looking forward to new challenge...
New signing Kirk Broadfoot plans to call on his experience to help Rotherham United perform in the Championship next season after agreeing to join on a free transfer yesterday.
Broadfoot, spent the early part of his career at full-back, but more recently operated into the centre, where he claims to be more comfortable. The 29 year-old, who has three league titles amongst his winners medals has spent two years in the second tier playing for Blackpool, and believes that knowledge of the level can be passed on to his new teammates.
“I prefer to play centre-half but I can play at full-back if the Manager needs it but my aim is just to play as many games as possible and give a few of the lads around me some of experience of the Championship to help us up the league.
Broadfoot was the fourth signing of the summer, and joins a familiar face in former Tangerines loanee Matt Derbyshire.
“There’s been some good additions, I know Matty from when he came on loan at Blackpool. He’s a good player and a good lad and I think he just needs a run of games really; he didn’t really get that at Blackpool but when he did play he did really well. I don’t know the other boys personally but I know they’re good players and the Manager has said he expects more so they’re good additions and it’s big things for Rotherham United.”
Despite his Championship experience, the big defender is best known for his time north of the border where he featured in Rangers’ UEFA Cup Final defeat to Zenit St. Petersburg and whilst it may have led to some fond memories there could be an Old Firm rivalry in the camp.
“I had some great memories at Rangers, and being a Rangers fan myself made it special so no doubt I’ll have a bit of banter with the Manager!
“I was lucky enough to play up there in some big nights, like the European nights at Ibrox in the Champions League, and it doesn’t get much bigger than a European Cup final, they’re memories I take with me. Playing with my country was a big thing and scoring on my debut, but I’m looking forward to the next chapter at a club which is clearly looking up all the time and that’s a big factor in coming here.”
