New signing Anthony Wordsworth says he wants to prove to everyone that he is a Championship player following his loan switch from Ipswich Town.
The former Colchester United midfielder has signed a long-term loan agreement with the Millers and goes straight into the squad for today’s Sky Bet Championship fixture with Millwall at The Den.
After joining Ipswich two years ago for a six-figure fee injuries scuppered his early progress but now the Camden-born operator is ready to show that he belongs in the second tier.
“I am hoping to get a run of games behind me and show everyone that I am capable of playing at this level,” Anthony told www.themillers.co.uk
“It is a challenge and I am looking forward to it.
“I’ve trained yesterday and if I am called upon to play tomorrow that would be nice. If I get the opportunity then I will be giving it 100% like I do for every club, it is very exciting to be in contention to play.”
The deal was done very quickly with the 25-year-old taking little time to answer the Millers call after being made available by Ipswich boss Mick McCarthy.
“Mick McCarthy rang me to say that he had circulated my name to say I was available and I went to see him on Thursday to also say I wanted to get out and play some games,” Anthony added.
“Straight away I was made aware that Rotherham were interested so as soon as I took the call my answer was yes.”
Anthony joins fellow Ipswich loanee Paul Taylor in the Millers ranks with Steve Evans’ side also hosting several other former Tractor Boys in their squad. Anthony revealed he didn’t have to seek their advice on whether to move north, he was already set on the switch to New York Stadium.
“I didn’t speak to anyone, I didn’t really need to,” admitted Anthony.
“I wanted to come here straight away, it was an opportunity to come and play some football so that was the only thing that I needed to know.”
After starting his career with Colchester where he carved out a reputation as a goalscoring midfielder, Anthony will be looking to revisit that early promise and is ready to play a part at The Den this afternoon.
“It is going to be a difficult game but I’m ready if selected,” Anthony reiterated.
“Ian Holloway has got them playing for him and they have started the season well. It will be a good game and a match where we’ll have to work extremely hard if we are to get something.”
