Rotherham United continue to recruit in the local area, with the Millers reaching out to schools to fill their spare weekday evenings.

“We have a monthly planner which we try and fill up with as much constructive football for the academy as possible,” said Academy Manager Garreth Barker.

“I know we train three times a week and then play on a Sunday but if we can fill some midweek fixtures in, then it’s beneficial. On the back of that we’re pushing for an initiative that will link us with the schools in Rotherham. We’ve been in touch with all the schools and had a good response on that. We’ve asked schools to recommend non Academy players to us, and Matt (Hamshaw) has got around 30 kids coming in for an open trial.

“We’ve got a couple of games coming up against Wickersley and Maltby school but it’s a great response from teachers who are very busy themselves and we’re delighted with that. We want to use this to get as many local players as possible. Obviously they’re not all going to be to standard but there are some out there.”
