The Millers fall to a narrow defeat...

Rotherham United were narrowly defeated in their opening Youth Alliance fixture against Scunthorpe United.

The Millers youngsters were on the end of a 2-1 defeat despite a fine goal from second year scholar Mason Warren which brought the scores level.

The Millers gave debuts to a number of first year scholars who impressed Academy Manager Garreth Barker, who also praised Warren for finishing a superb team goal.

“The first game of the season proved to be good test for you us and a great experience for a number of our first year scholars who were making their debut,” said Barker.

“For a number of our lads this was a big step up and they have made a good first impression.

“I thought that the first period was a little disjointed with not much quality provided by either side. They had a centre-forward who is very highly-rated; he did cause us some problems and opened the scoring before half-time.

“We made some changes at the break which immediately bore fruit when we equalised just after the break. Mason Warren scored with a fantastic 20 yard lob over the ‘keeper after a move which consisted of 13 passes.

“We were much better in the second half and created a number of chances but a defensive error let them in and the same player made it 2-1 with 10 minutes remaining.”

Rotherham: Denton; Gibson, Hallatt, Peace-McDonald, Smalley, Bailey-King (Potts 80), Fenton (Dickinson 70), Wiles, Warren, Yates, Norfolk (Johnson 45).

Subs not used: Bilboe, Muskwe.
