Mike Pollitt returns...
Rotherham United have appointed former favourite Mike Poillitt as Paul Warne's new goalkeeper coach.The former ‘keeper, who enjoyed two highly successful spells as a player with the Millers, replaces Andy Dibble who has joined Cardiff City.
Pollitt will return to the home dugout for Saturday’s fixture against Norwich City. Current interim manager Warne was delighted to welcome back his former team mate, who also worked with current coach John Breckin in his first two spells at the club.
“I'm buzzing to have him here. He's a big character, he's infectious, funny and energetic - everything I like in my staff,” Warne told www.themillers.co.uk
“He came to the game on Boxing Day when we played Wigan and he got a great reception from the fans. All I need to do now is get Alan Lee as my striker coach and Stewart Talbot as my midfield dog!
“It's a good appointment for the club I am delighted with it. Polly has been a family friend for years and I've been on holidays with him - I've always been in contact. I used to travel in with him and Knilly (Alan Knill) and Steve Thompson, so it was a good car of characters. I know from what he has done in coaching circles just how good he is at his job, and the keepers here will really warm to him.
“I've just told all the lads about it, so they know and the big horse will come in this morning for his return.”
Pollitt’s first spell with the Millers coincided with promotion from the old Division Three, but he joined Chesterfield in 2000. He returned in 2001, establishing himself as the number one under Ronnie Moore as Rotherham maintained their place in the second tier.
The 44-year-old joined Wigan Athletic in 2005, where he would play in the Premier League and in a League Cup final, before ending his playing days there in 2014. He then took on the role of goalkeeper coach at the DW Stadium until his departure last year.
“I've made it blatantly clear that I'm proud to work for the Chairman and this great club and it's the same with Polly,” Warne added.
“He's part of the fabric of this club and has spent as many years here as me. He's a big part of the club's history and I hope he'll be a big part of the future.
“He sounded excited when I spoke to him today. We're close and he's been out of football for about eight weeks or so and is keen to get back in. The fact that it's this club, and it means a lot to him, will help him settle in straight away."
