Rotherham United Reserves were beaten 3-0 in the Central League against local rivals Chesterfield.

An inexperienced Rotherham side were unable to prevent goals from Ricky German (2) and Joe Rowley, as the Millers were defeated at the Proact Stadium.

First year professionals Fabian Bailey and Tom Rose were joined by Jerry Yates and Mason Warren in the side, with Garreth Barker giving an opportunity to a host of Academy prospects.

Chesterfield had the first real chance of the game when German ran clear on the angle, but under pressure he guided a low shot wide of the far post.

On 15 minutes the home side broke the deadlock. Jake Beesley crossed from the right and Rowley rose highest to loop a header over Harry Fidler, whose touch onto the bar wasn’t enough to stop the ball crossing the line.

The Millers had Warren to thank for preventing further damage when his well timed blocked denied Shaun Okojie who raced clear through the middle.

Rowley went close just past the half hour mark when he cut inside Bailey just inside the area, but he curled his effort just over Fidler’s right hand post.

Beesley was causing problems down the right, but after his initial break into the area was halted, the ball rebounded to the winger but he fired over the bar.

With just over three minutes until the break, the home side made their pressure count by adding a second. German broke into the area, shrugging off the challenge of Jake Southern-Copper before sliding the ball coolly beyond Fidler.

Yates had the Millers best effort of the half, coming short to pick up the ball, but his low shot from 20 yards was held by Lloyd Allinson.

Just before the break Reece McGinley found Yates in the area, but after creating a yard of space for the shot his effort was blocked by the Chesterfield defence.

After the break the hosts stung the palms of Fidler when Beesley's cut-back was smashed towards goal by German, but Fidler turned his effort around the post.

The Millers carved out their best opening of the game when sub Sam Martin slid a delightful low cross into the back post, but fellow sub Kai Herbert fired over from close range.

With just under 15 minutes remaining German bagged his second of the afternoon from eight yards out, following a low cross from the right.

German was then denied his hat-trick soon after following a low block from Fidler.

Just before the end great work by Yates allowed Charlie Parnell-Wilson to switch the play to the onrushing Bailey, allowing the full-back to fire a rasping drive which was palmed away by Allinson.
