Jerry Yates talks to www.themillers.co.uk...

Young Rotherham United forward Jerry Yates says his goal against Premier League Sunderland at the weekend has given him a confidence boost ahead of the new campaign.

The 19-year-old, who is entering his second year as a professional at AESSEAL New York Stadium, insists scoring against top flight opposition in front of the home supporters has given him belief going into the 2016/17 Sky Bet Championship season.

“For me to get the goal was a big confidence boost ahead of the season,” Jerry told www.themillers.co.uk.

“To get the full 90 minutes as well is good fitness for me, especially against tough opposition because it’s not going to get much tougher than that.”

Yates played the entirety of the friendly against the Black Cats on Saturday as his side slipped to a 2-1 defeat, but believes the run out was beneficial as preparations continue for the season’s kick off on August 6th.

“Obviously it’s tough against a Premier League side with them always keeping the ball but I’ve managed to get my goal and the team has come out in good shape as well,” he continued.

“We’ve got good minutes under our belts and feel like we’re ready for the season to start so it’s looking good.”

The forward also reserved praise for new Millers boss Alan Stubbs after the home supporters were treated to a new style of play on Saturday and is enjoying the freedom of the new system.

“All the lads respect him and he’s given us the confidence to go and play,” Yates explained.

“He’s told us to be confident in ourselves and express yourself more often and it’s good."
