Hereford 0 v 1 Rotherham - Report

Rotherham United maintained their winning start to the league season after a battling 1-0 win at Hereford United. Paul Warne was the Millers match winner when he stooped to head in an Adam Le Fondre cross just before half-time to secure the Millers first away win of the new campaign. Ronnie Moore made just one change to the team that beat Cheltenham 6-4 at Don Valley, with Warne replacing the injured Tom Elliott. Ryan Cresswell played despite being a doubt with a neck injury and lined-up in defence alongside Exodus Geohaghon. The first chance of the game fell to the home side when a James McQuilken cross found Janos Kovacs free at the back post, but his header from six yards was straight at Andy Warrington. McQuilken was involved again on 13 minutes when his shot from 20 yards flashed wide of Warrington's far post. The Millers were looking comfortable in possession and were shading the play but the efforts on goal were coming from the home side. On 16 minutes Sean Canham tested Warrington with a header which the Millers number one was equal to. The Millers came close on 29 minutes when a cross from Kevin Ellison clipped the head of Kovacs and whistled just wide of the far post. Rotherham's first half possession came to fruition just before the break when they took a deserved lead. Quick thinking by Nicky Law resulted in a throw into the area for Le Fondre and as he hooked the ball into the six yard box, Warne threw his head at the ball at full stretch to nod beyond Adam Bartlett. Half time
Hereford United 0 v 1 Rotherham United The Bulls made a flying start to the second half with Canham having an early shot well saved by Warrington. O'Neil Thompson then went close a minute later when he planted a header from eight yards well wide. On 62 minutes the Millers came close when an Ellison free kick found Le Fondre at the near post but when at full stretch he could only direct the ball wide of the post. On 67 minutes the home side missed a great chance. A long ball forward put Stuart Fleetwood clear on goal but under pressure from Dean Holden he guided his shot wide of the far post. The Millers had a chance to double their lead when a Law corner found the head of Cresswell but he directed his effort over the bar. The game could have been killed in the 74th minute when the Millers broke in numbers. Ellison travelled towards goal but his pass to Law wasn't the best, the Millers number seven checked inside but dragged his shot just past the far post. On 76 minutes Hereford should have been level. Thompson found a yard of space in a crowded penalty area but slammed his shot from eight yards wide of the near post. The Millers were forced to take an aerial bombardment for the last 10 minutes but they held on to secure a battling three points. Full time
