Rotherham 0-0 Morecambe - Report

Rotherham United were held to a 0-0 draw at Don Valley by a hardworking and battling Morecambe outfit. Despite dominating for large parts of the game Rotherham couldn't convert their possession, with the closest effort a Danny Harrison header cleared off the line. It was a tentative start to the first half for both teams, with neither able to construct much in terms of build up play. It was the Shrimps though who started slightly the brighter as they pressed the Millers in their own half but failed to convert the pressure into goals. Rotherham picked up as the half developed, with Kevin Ellison firing a clean strike unfortunately straight at the thankful 'keeper Barry Roche on 11 minutes after working his way through the Morecambe defence. The away side continued to play aggressively and came close with Garry Hunter finding some space on the corner of the 18 yard box , though only managing to drag his shot wide. In form striker Adam Le Fondre looked lively and worked hard with the service he was given, though he had to wait until the 33rd minute to find himself in behind the Shrimps' defence, drilling his shot straight at Roche from eight yards. The half almost ended badly for the Millers with a Hunter cross just drifting just out of the reach of Jim Bentley, with a brave Warrington committing himself to claim the ball. Half Time Rotherham United 0 v 0 Morecambe The second half started evenly, with the first major chance for the Millers coming when a Paul Warne cross was just inches too high for a fully stretched Ellison as the ball sailed out past Roche's right post. Rotherham started to stamp their authority on the game exerting pressure on the Shrimps with a slick passing move courtesy of some deft touches by Le Fondre and Ryan Taylor on the 60th minute. Taylor himself came close only two minutes later as his side-footed shot from 25 yards brought the crowd to their feet, with the effort drifting just wide of the away side's post. The Millers were controlling proceedings and Morecambe were barely able to register a shot, let alone a shot on target, as top of the table Rotherham began to look increasingly dangerous going forward. They came close when a Harrison header was cleared off the line by an outstretched Hunter on 65 minutes. Rotherham though crucially failed to convert their dominance into goals, with late efforts from Ellison and Tom Pope blocked by the experienced Roche.
